Secondary GT in Katy ISD
The secondary GT service model is a Specific Subject Matter Aptitude model. Identified students in grades 6-12 are served in one or more of the four core content areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP curricula are differentiated to meet the unique needs of gifted learners. AP/GT and Pre-AP/GT courses are taught by teachers who have received training in the education of the gifted. These courses carry a "weighted" grade point; for example, an A average counts as five grade points rather than the traditional four grade points.
Benefits of GT Identification:
Benefits of GT Identification:
- GT identification is designed to address the particular educational needs of the gifted learner.
- The teacher must have 30 hours of GT training.
- The teacher is aware of the GT identification and can address unique needs of gifted learners in that class.
- GT students are part of a learning community that can help meet their social/emotional and intellectual needs.
- A cluster of GT students in a class creates a unique dynamic in the classroom that is evidenced by the dialogue and the depth of the conversation in class.
- 7th grade GT reading and writing are combined into one class, giving ELA GT students an extra elective that year. Students must be screened in 6th grade for 7th grade GT placement.
Screening
If you would like your child screened for the Gifted and Talented program, make sure to complete a Secondary Parent Checklist by the deadline set by Katy ISD. A copy of the Parent Checklist can be downloaded below and returned to the GT Facilitator, Jaclyn Clements. Please make sure it is completely filled out, examples included as required, and signed by a parent or guardian.
Screening results will be mailed home in May. Students identified for GT services will begin receiving services the following school year.
Transfer Students
Transfer students who have been previously identified for a Gifted & Talented Program in a different district will need to apply for Gifted & Talented Services and go through the assessment process for Katy ISD. Screening for transfer students is on-going and must be initiated by the parent within 2 weeks of enrollment. Please inform the front office upon registration, or you may contact Jaclyn Clements (GT facilitator). You will need to complete the Transfer Student Parent Consent and provide proof of GT identification from the previous school district, which can be in the form of a report card, screening profile, acceptance letter, etc. If you have any test results from the screening process, you may submit those as well.
Transfer students who have not been identified for Gifted & Talented services previously can be screened during our regular screening window. See the section above about screening for more information. If enrollment occurs after screening deadline, contact the GT Facilitator for information about the screening timeline that applies to your child's enrollment date.
